CAMpus Discovery Program
The Campus Discovery Program will be held on the following Fridays this coming academic year: September 28, 2018, October 05, 2018, October 12, 2018, October 19, 2018, November 02, 2018, November 16, 2018, and November 30, 2018 from 3:00pm to 5:30pm (4pm to 5:30pm for students with extended school day).
Location: High school participants of the Campus Discovery Program will begin and end their afternoon on the steps of McGill's Redpath Museum; activities take place in Montreal (McGill campus and one or more other university campus in Montreal).
Participants: Each session is planned to have a maximum of 15 children. Registration will follow ARMP normal procedures, and will take place on a first-come, first-served basis. The minimum age for admission in the Campus Discovery Program is 12 years old.
The Campus Discovery Program is an active branch of the FACE UP! Career Awareness initiative and aims to complement typical career orientation activities offered by school(s) attended by the participants, through providing more opportunities for in-depth discovery of various areas of study and selected career paths, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”). This is largely accomplished through mentorship matching with McGill students, learning labs, hands-on workshops, information sessions and inspirational presentations.
Through its many collaborations with local community and campus organizations, the Campus Discovery Program is designed to inspire the participants' desire to pursue post-secondary education, which may serve to heighten students' interest in their high school studies and enhance internal motivation to succeed.
The Campus Discovery Program offers participants both academic-themed workshops (e.g., introduction to coding for high school students, measuring tree age and distance from trees using trigonometry, math murder mystery game/activity, chemistry experiments, testing an engineering prototype or building a small catapult, science/technology learning labs) as well as life skills workshops (e.g., building and writing a resume, applying for part time jobs and volunteer work, building leadership skills, healthy lifestyle choices, study tips, relaxation ideas). If the student is in Sec. IV or V (grade 10 or 11), we strongly suggest also enrolling in the CEGEP Discovery program.
Last year, participants had the chance to extract Strawberry DNA, perform Gel Electrophoresis, learn how to code using JavaScript, learned about astronomy and more. Note that each year, we try to organise new activities; thus participation in the program leads to cumulative knowledge and not repetitive.
Note that the Campus Discovery Program is associated with FACE School nor the FACE School Foundation; rather it is offered as an independent activity by ARMP. Activities on McGill Campus are offered in an English-immersion type setting, although bilingual volunteers will be present to answer any questions and translate as necessary. A healthy snack will be provided for the kids.
Signing Up for the Program
The cost of the program is $80 for all 7 sessions of Campus Discovery (plus $10 for ARMP registration).
You will receive a confirmation of registration and invitation to attend the sessions with a description of the details you will need (confirmation of drop off and pick up, description of activities and what your child will need to bring with them).
